Allied Health Assisting
for High School Students
This course
provides the student with the opportunity to examine several allied health
careers including physical, occupational, or respiratory therapy; or
clinical lab, veterinary, medical records, or radiology assisting. The
course includes both theory and clinical components.
CONTENT:

Health
Careers Core I
(One Credit)
is the first course high school students take when they select any of the
three program areas (Nursing Assistant, Allied Health Assisting, or
Practical Nursing).
The course introduces
students to important elements of the health curriculum, such as medical
terminology, infection control, communication skills, workplace safety,
healthcare organization, and basic math and science.
Students earn one
credit towards graduation when they complete the course.

Health
Careers Core II
(One Credit)
is the second required course and focuses on the study of anatomy and
physiology. Students who are enrolling in Practical Nursing will have the
opportunity to complete the course online.
Students earn one
credit towards graduation when they complete the course.

Allied
Health Assisting
Students must maintain a
3.0 GPA (final grade of 80%) in Health Careers Core I and II in order to be
eligible for Allied Health Assisting. Attendance records and employability
skills are evaluated prior to program acceptance.
PROGRAM LENGTH:
This is a two-year program for high school students. Students can earn up
to 4 credits per year towards graduation counting one science credit.
Classes meet Monday
through Friday on a half-day basis. Students will attend morning (7:25 –
10:15 am) or afternoon (10:50 to 1:30 pm) sessions depending upon the
cluster selected.
ENTRANCE
REQUIREMENTS:
Student's competency in math, language, and reading is pre-assessed for
counseling purposes and to help determine the student’s success in the
program.
ENTRANCE DATES:
This program is open for enrollment once a year at the beginning of the
school year (August).
