Florida Child Care Professional Credential

Course Objectives:  This course is designed to enable the caregiver of infants and toddlers, ages birth to three, the ability to design and maintain a suitable setting for the children, giving special attention to brain development and the basic health and safety needs of our youngest children.  In addition, the caregiver will be able to develop a stimulating plan of activities, which facilitates the development of the child’s social, emotional, and creative abilities.  Also, the caregiver will be able to observe children’s development, keep efficient logs of this development, notify the proper personnel of any developmental delays observed, and carry out enhancing, therapeutic activities for children with special needs.  The caregiver will develop the professionalism needed, including communication skills, to interact effectively with parents, staff and other professionals.

Length and Times of course: Generally this is a 10-month program.  The time spent in the program by individual students may vary according to classes previously taken and accepted by SCTI, or the pace at which a student is comfortable progressing through the required courses.  Students may enroll in the program quarterly:  August, October, January, and March.

Classes are held evenings in various locations across the county.

The state requires that students complete at least 120 hours of formal education and 480 hours of work experience with young children.  While past experience working with children may be counted toward the total required hours, students must complete 80 hours of direct work with children during their enrollment in the program.  Upon completion of all program requirements, SCTI staff will recommend students for the Florida Child Care Professional Credential.
