Adults With Disabilities (AWD) students have embarked on a new challenge and community service project by joining Warm Up America One Square at a Time! This project is sponsored by the Warm Up America! Foundation and members of the Craft Yarn Council of America.
Did you know that since 1998, there has been a 400% increase in the number of people under age 35 who knit! Vanna White, Cameron Diaz, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are just a few of the many celebrities who have embraced knitting.
In this project, AWD students are learning the craft of knitting while practicing the important life skills of patience, concentration and determination! Using size 8 needles and casting on 26 stitches, the knitter must use math skills to carefully count each stitch and measure their progress as they strive to complete their rectangle. Students practice hand-eye coordination, sustained focus, and improve confidence in their ability to succeed. Knitting provides an outlet to be creative, to be individual, and to have fun. Most importantly, students practice compassion and concern as their first project benefits those less fortunate.
"Students are inspired to donate their first knitting project, a simple 7"x9" rectangle, to Warm Up America. This charity will assemble the rectangles into afghans for homeless shelters, teen pregnancy homes, hospitals, nursing homes and other national nonprofit agencies".
If any SCTI knitters would like to contribute a finished 7"x9" rectangle and join in the fun, we are open and accepting donations on Thursdays in Building 7 - Room 706. We hope to hear from you.
